The Copa America was originally scheduled to be played in 2020 like the European Championship, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was shifted to 2021. The Copa America 2021 is now about to begin next month, and it was initially supposed to be jointly held by Argentina and Colombia.
But CONMEBOL has now decided to move all the matches from Colombia due to the social and economic crises that that country are going through. Copa America 2021 will now be entirely hosted by Argentina.
CONMEBOL released this statement via social media: “The Argentine government presented Conmebol with a strict protocol for the 2021 Conmebol Copa América to be held in their country.”
“In a meeting that took place in the Quinta de Olivos, the organisational and logistical aspects were evaluated, with the eventual authorisation of additional headquarters, and everything concerning the sanitary protocols.”
“The analysis of the dispute of this Conmebol Copa América and its sanitary protocols so that it can be organised in the country will remain under the rigorous study of officials of the Ministry of Health of the Argentine Republic.”
“This was agreed by the President of the Argentine Republic, Alberto Fernández, and the head of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, in a meeting this afternoon.”
