NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 GPUs going unsold in retail due to their ridiculous prices

It’s been a few days since NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card was released at the absurd price of $1199 US, and it appears that buyers aren’t buying it (literally). The card isn’t selling well in the consumer segment just days after its launch, and there are several reasons for this.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 is an excellent card in terms of generation-over-generation performance and power efficiency; yet, NVIDIA’s asking price is plain insane. The 4080 debuted at $1199 USD, the single highest price increase we’ve ever seen on a ’80’ class GeForce graphics card.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 was released two years ago for $699 USD. The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB was priced at $899 in the United States. When compared to the 4080’s $1999 US MSRP, we notice a 71.5% and 50% price increase, respectively. For several years, the NVIDIA ’80’ class cards were priced between $550 and $700 in the United States.

NVIDIA 4080 shipment units:

NVIDIA 4090 shipment units:

๐ŸŸข130,000

Total RTX 40 shipment units:

๐ŸŸข160,000

NVIDIA's 4090 was pretty much sold out at launch.

Retailers still have 4080 in stock. ๐Ÿ˜ถโ€๐ŸŒซ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ถโ€๐ŸŒซ๏ธ

If we take cryptocurrency out of the equation for a moment (which helped artificially inflate card prices), people who paid $700 or $800 US for an RTX 3080 are simply not willing to pay more than $1K US for a ’80’ class graphics card, despite its performance and fancy features.

NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card is now available in nearly all areas. This is not a scene witnessed following the launch of the RTX 4090, and it is certainly not due to NVIDIA’s enormous inventory of the RTX 4080.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 has shipped close to 30,000 units.

That is 70% less than RTX 4090 shipments, which were at 100,000 units a few weeks ago (we exclusively disclosed here) and are now close to 130,000 units. So far, around 160,000 RTX 40 series cards have been shipped. This equates to 30,000 RTX 4080 units and 130,000 RTX 4090 units. So, despite fewer shipments, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 is still having difficulty selling, and users are simply waiting for a cheaper alternative under $1000 USD or purchasing an RTX 4090.

The final and most important factor preventing consumers from purchasing an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card is the impending release of AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards, which the red team has been marketing directly against the RTX 4080, taking shots at the 16-pin connectors (now confirmed as a user-error), its massively oversized reference models, and betting on its brand new set of features. The prices are very appealing at $899 and $999 USD, but we advise our to wait for final reviews. Regardless, the GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card has the lowest performance to price ratio at the moment.
