In addition to this, a new GeForce RTX 4070 is also in development by NVIDIA which will use GDDR6 memory instead of the faster GDDR6X. Recently new information has surfaced obliging another wave of details on NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs that are also under a shortage amidst some production dilemmas and the limited supply of GDDR6X as Micron is trying to solve its batch quality control issues with next-gen memory technology.

More About the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070

MEGAsizeGPU notes that NVIDIA could begin using GDDR6 memory for a number of its RTX 4070 models in order to overcome these supply shortages. We know that this new model which is based on the PG141 SKU 347 PCB will share almost identical specifications to its predecessor, but with rumor suggesting VRAM could be running at 20 Gbps.

The GeForce RTX 4070 GPU uses AD104-250-A1 architecture, with a specification that includes 5888 CUDA cores and 184 TUUs along with 64 ROPs. It works with a base clock of 1920 MHz and reaches up to 2475 MHz, accompanied by a 192-bit bus interface and 12 GB of VRAM. The latest GDDR6X devices have memory bandwidth rated as high as 504.2 GB/s (using 21 Gbps modules) and a TDP of 200W.

At the same time, if NVIDIA uses 20 Gbps GDDR6 memory, bandwidth will drop to 480 GB/s representing a 5% decrease compared to the GDDR6X models. While this reduction could impact gaming performance, the RTX 4070 still includes a 48 MB L2 cache and supports various memory compression techniques and overclocking, which may help mitigate performance loss. Overclocking the GDDR6 memory to 21 Gbps should be feasible for gaming, though it might not be ideal for continuous use.

The new GDDR6-based RTX 4070 models are expected to hit the market soon, as GDDR6 memory is readily available. These models should be priced slightly lower than the GDDR6X versions, potentially around $499, compared to the standard models priced around $549, with discounts possible at some retailers. Further availability details are yet to be announced.
