Not Dead, Just Quiet: The Truth Behind the Netflix Minecraft Series Rumors

Panic swept through Minecraft fans this week after the game’s Netflix series went missing from a major animation showcase. Turns out the silence wasn’t a red flag — it was just silence.

Why the Cancellation Minecraft Rumors Started

Netflix and Mojang Studios first announced their CG-animated Minecraft series back in 2024, timed to celebrate the game’s 15th anniversary. The project landed with WildBrain Studios, the animation team behind Netflix’s Sonic Prime and Carmen Sandiego. The last real update came at the Annecy Animation Festival in June 2025, when the core creative team was revealed alongside early concept art.

Since then, nothing. That silence became harder to ignore when the series was noticeably absent from Netflix’s Annecy 2026 showcase this summer. With no promotional material surfacing for over a year, speculation exploded online. Viral posts from fan accounts racked up millions of views, and Reddit communities like r/Minecraft and r/cartoons began digging for clues, worried the show might quietly disappear the way Netflix’s Inside Job did.

So, Is It Actually Canceled?

No. Netflix confirmed directly that production is continuing as planned, though the company isn’t sharing specifics on timelines yet. More convincingly, Mojang’s own Lead Designer and Creative Director, Jens “Jeb” Bergensten, addressed the rumors himself on Bluesky on August 28, 2026, simply confirming the project is still actively in the works. Several people attached to the production also still list their roles as current, reinforcing that nothing has quietly folded behind the scenes.

When Might It Actually Arrive?

Given the lack of visual updates so late in 2026, the most realistic estimate points to a 2027 or 2028 release, which lines up with the typical 3-to-4-year runway most major Netflix animated originals need between greenlight and launch.

Interestingly, that timeline means fans will likely see the second live-action Minecraft movie hit theaters before the animated series ever streams. Warner Bros. fast-tracked a sequel after the first live-action film’s massive 2025 box office success, and A Minecraft Movie Squared began filming in New Zealand in May 2026 with Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and newcomer Kirsten Dunst. That sequel already has a confirmed theatrical release date of July 23, 2027 — putting the movie ahead of the show in the race to screens.

Not the Only Quiet Game Adaptation

Minecraft isn’t alone in this holding pattern. Netflix’s Clash of Clans animated series, announced back in May 2025, has faced a similarly quiet stretch with no major updates. A Netflix representative recently confirmed that project is also still moving forward, with Fletcher Moules continuing on as showrunner.
