via CNET

Nokia mobile phone license holder HMD Global keyed into India’s “Make in India” initiative and it has been manufacturing its smartphones and feature phones in the country in partnership with various ODM(original design manufacturer) and EMS(electronic manufacturing solution).

What is new is that the company has begun exporting phones manufactured in its Indian factory overseas. Let’s give you a brief background of the Nokia 105, the feature phone was first launched in 2019 and has since gone on to become the top-selling phone in India and globally.

“We have started exports from India. Till now, all of our phones sold in India are made in India. Not only are they made in India, but we are also focussing on making them with Indian manufacturing partners and we are not kick-starting exports from India,” the VP added.

The HMD Global VP reiterated the immense relevance for feature phones at this present time when smartphones are growing more and more popular by the day due to their versatile use cases, longer-lasting battery, easy repairs, and low pricing.

He noted that despite the gradual decline of the global feature phone market due to a rise in more affordable entry-level smartphones, the Indian feature phone market has held its own.
