“Trying to Get a Pardon?”: Godfrey Reacts to Nicki Minaj Speaking Up for Christians in Nigeria

Comedian Godfrey raised eyebrows this week when he questioned Nicki Minaj’s motives behind her sudden advocacy for Nigerian Christians, suggesting the rapper might have ulterior political motives. The Nigerian-American comic’s comments come after Minaj delivered a speech at the United Nations addressing religious persecution.

Nicki Minaj Controversy Overview

Godfrey’s Skepticism

Speaking to photographers at LAX, Godfrey, who was born to Nigerian parents, didn’t hold back his doubts about Minaj’s sudden interest in Nigerian affairs. He questioned whether the rapper was seeking attention or possibly positioning herself for political favors.

The comedian noted that Minaj had been feuding with multiple artists in recent months, making her pivot to international humanitarian issues seem abrupt and calculated. He wondered aloud if she was trying to secure a pardon for someone or gain favorable treatment from the Trump administration.

However, Godfrey acknowledged that if Minaj’s intentions are genuine, he’d support her advocacy efforts. He emphasized being open to being wrong about his assessment while maintaining his skeptical stance based on the sudden nature of her involvement.

Nicki Minaj’s UN Speech

On November 18, 2025, Minaj delivered remarks at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, thanking President Trump for prioritizing what she described as religious persecution against Nigerian Christians. U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz introduced her as a witness whose large following may help illuminate a crisis often overlooked by those far from affected regions.

The rapper emphasized that her advocacy wasn’t about political partisanship but about standing against injustice. She addressed her fanbase directly during the speech, clarifying that supporting persecuted communities transcends political boundaries.

The Nigeria Situation

Nigeria’s government has denied claims of systematic religious persecution, stating that while conflicts occasionally occur, Muslims and Christians generally coexist peacefully. According to a Nigerian NGO, since the beginning of 2025, 7,000 Christians have been killed, though these figures remain disputed.

The situation is complex, involving ethnic tensions, resource conflicts, and historical grievances that extend beyond simple religious divisions. Many experts argue that framing Nigeria’s violence solely through a religious lens oversimplifies deeply rooted socioeconomic and political issues.

Political Dimensions

Minaj’s advocacy aligns with recent Trump administration statements about protecting Christians globally. She publicly supported Trump’s Truth Social post claiming Christianity faces an existential threat in Nigeria, prompting both praise from conservative circles and criticism from those questioning her political alignment.

The rapper’s involvement has sparked debate about celebrity activism, with supporters praising her use of platform for humanitarian causes while critics question whether she fully understands Nigeria’s complex dynamics.

Backlash and Support

Minaj reportedly lost over 100,000 followers after sharing pro-Trump content and videos highlighting his administration’s accomplishments. The move surprised many fans given her previous political stances and the typically progressive nature of hip-hop’s mainstream voices.

Conversely, Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz praised Minaj for using her massive platform to address the issue, while White House spokesperson Anna Kelly thanked her for speaking out, calling her “Super-Based” in a statement to Newsweek.

Godfrey’s Nigerian Perspective

As someone with direct Nigerian heritage, Godfrey brings a unique perspective to the conversation. While supporting genuine advocacy for his parents’ homeland, he expressed frustration with what he perceives as opportunistic involvement from celebrities without deep understanding of Nigeria’s nuanced challenges.

His comments reflect broader concerns within the Nigerian diaspora about Western narratives oversimplifying African conflicts and potentially doing more harm than good through uninformed intervention.
