New York Red Bulls Secure Former Bayern Munich and PSG Striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting as Designated Player

The New York Red Bulls have made a major move in the transfer market, confirming the signing of veteran striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting as a designated player for their 2025 roster.

This acquisition addresses one of the Red Bulls’ key areas of need, as the team struggled with consistent goal-scoring throughout the previous season. After a month of speculation, the Red Bulls are excited to bolster their forward line with a player of Choupo-Moting’s pedigree.

A Promising Addition to New York’s Attack

Choupo-Moting, a seasoned striker with vast experience across top European leagues, has been a free agent since his contract with Bayern Munich ended in June 2024. The Cameroon international will join the Harrison, NJ-based club on a two-year deal, with an option for an additional year in 2027. The move is subject to the receipt of his P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

“We are excited to add a player of Maxim’s caliber to our roster,” said Jochen Schneider, Head of Sport for New York Red Bulls. “Maxim is a great player, a winner, and his experience in Europe’s top leagues will be greatly important to our club in 2025 and beyond.”

Choupo-Moting’s Impressive European Stint

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s career trajectory has been a testament to his resilience and ability to perform at the highest levels. The 35-year-old forward enjoyed a successful tenure with Bayern Munich, where he played a crucial role in the club’s three Bundesliga title victories. In 122 appearances for Bayern, Choupo-Moting scored 38 goals, solidifying his reputation as a reliable contributor.

Choupo-Moting also had a significant stint with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), where he gained further recognition in Europe’s elite competitions. Despite his later rise to prominence, he has proven to be an invaluable asset to any team he joins, especially with his leadership qualities and work ethic. His vast experience, both domestically and internationally, is expected to elevate the Red Bulls’ forward line, giving them a much-needed boost as they look to improve their attacking output in the upcoming seasons.

A Strong Forward to Lead the Line

New York Red Bulls head coach Sandro Schwarz expressed his optimism about the arrival of the experienced forward: “Maxim is a strong forward that will bring a lot of experience and leadership to our club. He will be a great addition to our roster, and we are looking forward to seeing him on the pitch at Sports Illustrated Stadium.”

With Choupo-Moting’s signing, the Red Bulls now have a player capable of leading their attack, which struggled at times last season. His size, strength, and experience make him an ideal option to spearhead the club’s offense, and his ability to hold up the ball and bring others into play will be crucial for a team looking to make a deeper impact in Major League Soccer.

Impact on Team Dynamics and Dante Vanzeir’s Future

Choupo-Moting’s arrival has prompted discussions about the Red Bulls’ team formation, as well as the future of forward Dante Vanzeir. The signing marks the club’s third designated player slot being filled, with Emil Forsberg and Vanzeir being the other two players occupying these spots. The team’s decision to leave Vanzeir open for selection in last week’s Expansion Draft suggests that the Red Bulls might be considering a potential move away from the Belgian striker.

Vanzeir’s future with the club is now uncertain, as the team looks to balance its designated player slots and ensure the best possible attacking options for the 2025 season. It remains to be seen how Choupo-Moting’s addition will affect Vanzeir’s role in the squad, with the competition for starting spots intensifying as the new season approaches.

Looking Ahead to the MLS SuperDraft

As the Red Bulls prepare for the 2025 season, they are also focused on strengthening their roster in other areas. With the 29th pick in the upcoming MLS SuperDraft, the club will look to further bolster their squad for the upcoming season. The addition of Choupo-Moting is a significant step in the right direction, but the Red Bulls will continue to search for opportunities to improve their overall team composition as they aim to contend in the competitive landscape of Major League Soccer.

With a potent combination of experience and leadership, Choupo-Moting’s arrival could be the catalyst the New York Red Bulls need to return to the top of the Eastern Conference. Fans will be eagerly awaiting to see how he fits into the squad and how the team builds around their new designated player for the 2025 season and beyond.
