New “Bon Appétit, Your Majesty” Series: Cha Eun Woo Eyed To Lead A Fresh Story

One of K-drama’s biggest hits is getting a new chapter — but not the way fans expected. Netflix’s new “Bon Appétit, Your Majesty” series is officially in development, and it won’t be a straightforward Season 2. Instead, it’s shaping up as a fresh story in the same universe, with Cha Eun Woo reportedly offered the lead role.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty- Overview

Why This Isn’t a Typical Sequel

Unlike most K-drama follow-ups, this new installment won’t bring back original stars Lim Yoon A and Lee Chae Min. Instead, it’s being built as a standalone story within the same fantastical world — one that reimagines the show’s core premise of a modern-day chef transported into a royal Joseon kitchen. The original series followed chef Yeong Ji Yeong, who wins a top culinary competition in France only to be mysteriously pulled back to the Joseon Dynasty, where she must cook for a tyrannical king.

That premise struck a chord globally: the original series racked up over 44 million views across 2025 and early 2026, and posted a nationwide rating above 17%, making it one of tvN’s most-watched dramas of the year.

Where Cha Eun Woo Fits In

Best known to Netflix audiences for “The WONDERfools” and his career with K-pop group ASTRO, Cha Eun Woo has reportedly been approached for the male lead. Reports differ slightly on how far along things are — one outlet claims his casting is confirmed, while another says his agency has received the offer but is still reviewing it.

Complicating matters, Cha Eun Woo remains in mandatory military service until January 2027, meaning any real progress on casting or filming can’t move forward until his discharge. There have also been questions raised about a past tax controversy involving the actor, though he has stated the matter has since been resolved.

When Could We See It?

With production unlikely to start before February 2027 at the earliest, a 2028 release looks like the realistic outcome. More concrete details are expected once Cha Eun Woo completes his service and negotiations progress.
