Notebookcheck has conducted new performance tests on NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Laptop GPU versions, which found that when not running in full TGP mode, they performed lower than the entire RTX 3070 non-Ti series.

Each time a new NVIDIA laptop GPU is released, it appears that the GeForce laptop GPUs are incapable of outperforming lower-level SKUs that do not have the same power restrictions as the Ti series. After conducting preliminary tests using the MSI Stealth GS66 gaming laptop and the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 105W GPU, Notebookcheck has validated this behaviour.

The Vector GP66 model from MSI, which offers 150W graphics performance, displayed more negligible power levels in the testing. The results demonstrate that NVIDIA’s RTX 3070 Ti with 105W TGP falls behind NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3070 with 150W TGP mode in most laptop configurations.

The NVIDIA branding on the laptop, according to VideoCardz, does not indicate the system’s performance level. According to the website, purchasing an NVIDIA laptop with the RTX 3070 Ti mobile GPU is a good investment because the graphics chip uses less power. However, those hoping for better performance from the Ti variant may be disappointed.

The GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 105W from NVIDIA is built on a reduced GA104 design with 46 SM units and 5888 CUDA cores. The GPU has 8 GB of GDDR6 memory that runs at 14 Gbps through a 256-bit bus interface for up to 448 GB/s of bandwidth.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 105W has a boost clock of 1035 MHz, slower than the 150W variant, which has a boosted rate of 1485 MHz. The difference was as much as 9% in synthetic benchmarks, while in GPU-centric game benchmarks, such as Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XV, it was as high as 24%. In XMG Apex 17, the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 105W is also outperformed by the RTX 3070 150W model.

Media outlets demanded NVIDIA establish a mandate that all laptop designers declare TGP levels because of inconsistencies between GeForce Laptop SKUs with different power marks. REGULATORY AGENCIES MANDATED THE MOVE after NVIDIA stopped promoting its Max-Q/P branded Laptop graphics cards.
