Netflix’s New Spanish Rom-Com Is Already Breaking the Mould — Meet the Cactus Woman and the Balloon Man

If you loved Crazy About Her or Smiley, get ready — because Netflix is gearing up to deliver another Spanish romantic comedy that looks set to win hearts worldwide. And this one comes with one of the most delightfully unusual titles in recent memory.

What Is El Acercamiento de la Mujer Cactus y el Hombre Globo?

The film is an adaptation of the debut novel by Spanish author and musician David Martínez Álvarez — better known by his stage name, Rayden — originally published in Spain by Suma de Letras (Penguin Random House). International readers may recognise the book as The Coming Together of the Cactus Woman and the Balloon Man.

The plot is wonderfully unconventional. Sáhara is a brilliant, ironic florist who has turned cynicism into her ultimate defence against love, while Ciro is a bicycle courier convinced that loving someone only means getting hurt. An explosive encounter on the streets of Madrid keeps crossing their paths — and the city itself seems determined to bring them together.

Netflix Cast & Crew at a Glance

The film is being directed by Goya Award-winning filmmaker Kike Maíllo, with production handled by Sábado Time — the company behind Netflix’s international hit Crazy About Her and the smash thriller series Dos Tumbas, which quickly became the most-watched series on Netflix globally upon its release. whats-on-netflix
