Netflix’s Live-Action “Solo Leveling” Is Officially Filming — Here’s Everything We Know

One of the biggest names in modern anime is finally getting the live-action treatment. Netflix has confirmed its adaptation of “Solo Leveling,” and with filming now underway, fans of the record-breaking franchise have plenty to be excited — and a little nervous — about.

From Web Novel To Global Phenomenon

“Solo Leveling” began as a web novel by author Chugong before its webtoon adaptation, illustrated by Jang Sung-rak, took off worldwide. The anime adaptation then pushed the franchise into a different stratosphere entirely, with the webtoon amassing an impressive 14.3 billion cumulative views worldwide, while the anime became the most-watched title in Crunchyroll’s history and swept nine major categories at the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards.

The Story Being Adapted

Decades after mysterious portals begin unleashing monsters on the world, humans gain supernatural hunting abilities to fight back. Sung Jin-woo, one of Korea’s weakest hunters, barely survives a brutal double dungeon and is chosen by a mysterious “System” that lets him grow stronger by completing quests and clearing increasingly dangerous dungeons.

Production Status

Filming reportedly began in early May 2026 and is expected to run three to four months. The first season is rumored to run seven episodes, though Netflix hasn’t confirmed this officially. Given the scale of visual effects likely required, the series probably won’t arrive until late 2027 or early 2028 at the earliest.

Netflix’s track record with adapting beloved source material — including its live-action versions of “One Piece” and “Alice in Borderland” — offers some reassurance to fans wary of the shift from animation to live action.

This kind of anime-to-live-action pipeline reflects the growing global crossover between webtoons and the wider anime industry, which continues to fuel adaptations across streaming platforms.
