Netflix’s “Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory”: A Deliciously Unhinged Wonka Reboot Is Coming

Willy Wonka is back, and this time he’s just gotten out of prison — for turning a kid into a blueberry. That’s the kind of twisted, playful energy Netflix is leaning into with its animated reimagining of the beloved Roald Dahl classic, and the studio just revealed exactly when and how you’ll get to see it.

Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory: Release Plan

“Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory” will hit theaters worldwide on November 5, 2027, distributed internationally by Sony Pictures. It will then arrive on Netflix on December 22, 2027, timed perfectly for the holiday streaming rush.

Key Details

What’s the Story This Time?

This isn’t a retelling of the original golden ticket tale. Wonka has already served time for his infamous blueberry incident and returns to his factory determined to bring sweetness back into a “bitter world.” Standing in his way: a new generation of scrappy, “rotten” kids led by teenager Charlie Paley, who plots to break into the factory to save his family from eviction. It’s less nostalgic retread, more chaotic new chapter in the Roald Dahl universe Netflix has been steadily building out.

Why the Theatrical Window Matters

Netflix giving this film a full global theatrical run before streaming is part of a bigger shift — the same playbook it’s using for its upcoming Fincher/Tarantino/Pitt project and “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.” It signals Netflix sees this Wonka reboot as a genuine tentpole title, not just another animated drop buried in the catalog.

Beyond the Screen

Netflix has also lined up a global Wonka candy collaboration with Ferrero Group, launching this fall across the US and parts of Europe, plus a new toy line from Moose Toys ahead of the film’s 2027 release — so expect the Wonka branding to show up well before the movie itself does.
