At a Glance: 8 Netflix Movies Leaving Right Now

The Movies You Need to Watch Right Now

1. District 9 (2009)

District 9 is Neill Blomkamp’s genre-defining debut — a raw, documentary-style sci-fi thriller set in South Africa where stranded aliens are forced to live in squalid camps, serving as a sharp apartheid allegory. When a bumbling government agent (Sharlto Copley, brilliantly cast) is exposed to alien biotechnology, he becomes the most hunted man alive. The seamless VFX, relentless action and genuinely poignant social commentary make this an essential watch — and incredibly, there’s still been no sequel despite years of rumours. Catch it before April 1.

2. Ford v Ferrari (2019)

James Mangold’s Oscar-winning motorsport epic tells the true story of American car designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and hot-headed British racing driver Ken Miles (Christian Bale) battling corporate red tape and the laws of physics to build Ford a Le Mans-winning machine. The chemistry between its two leads is magnetic, and the race sequences are meticulously crafted and genuinely pulse-pounding. Even if cars bore you, the sheer human drama will hook you from the first lap. Leaving April 1.

3. Free Solo (2018)

Imagine climbing a 3,000-foot vertical rock face — with no ropes, no harness, and no second chances. That’s what professional rock climber Alex Honnold did at Yosemite’s El Capitan, and this Oscar-winning documentary captures every nerve-shredding moment. Directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin achieve something extraordinary here — a film that is simultaneously a sports documentary, a psychological portrait, and the most tense cinema experience money can’t buy. Leaving April 1.

4. Misery (1990)

Rob Reiner’s Stephen King adaptation remains one of the finest horror-thrillers ever made. James Caan plays a famous novelist rescued from a car crash by Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates) — his “number one fan” — who quickly reveals herself to be something far more terrifying. Kathy Bates won the Academy Award for Best Actress here, and her performance flips between unsettlingly sweet and violently unhinged with breathtaking ease. An absolute classic. Leaving April 1.

5. Molly’s Game (2017)

Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, this is the true story of Molly Bloom (Jessica Chastain) — an Olympic-class skier who built and ran the world’s most exclusive underground poker game, attracting Hollywood stars, sports royalty, and eventually the FBI. Sorkin’s trademark rapid-fire dialogue crackles throughout, and the dynamic between Chastain and Idris Elba (as her defence lawyer) is electric. Slick, smart, and endlessly entertaining. Leaving April 1.

6. The Call (2013)

Halle Berry gives one of her finest performances as Jordan Turner, a seasoned 911 operator who receives a desperate call from a kidnapped teenager (Abigail Breslin) locked inside a car boot. Director Brad Anderson builds suffocating, relentless tension as Jordan races to piece together the killer’s location before time runs out. If you enjoyed single-location thrillers, this is unmissable. Leaving April 1.

7. Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax (2012)

Perfect for a family evening before it goes. Young Ted (Zac Efron) ventures beyond his artificial city walls to find a real tree for the girl he likes, encountering the reclusive Once-ler and the grumpy but loveable Lorax (Danny DeVito, perfectly cast). The animation is gorgeous, the environmental message is timeless, and the soundtrack is genuinely catchy. Great for all ages. Leaving April 1.

8. We Grown Now (2023)

The quiet gem on this list and arguably the most important one to catch. Set in 1992 Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing projects, this deeply moving coming-of-age drama follows two best friends navigating childhood joy and community tragedy. With Jurnee Smollett and Lil Rel Howery in the supporting cast, writer-director Minhal Baig crafts something intimate, powerful and genuinely beautiful. Leaving April 3 — just days away.
