Official: Nacho Fernandez leaves Real Madrid after 23 years

Real Madrid have officially announced the departure of their captain, Nacho Fernandez, after spending 23 years with the club. The centre-back will be joining Qatari side Al Qadsiah, ending his illustrious spell in Europe.

In his final match with his boyhood club, he lifted the Champions League trophy as the captain of the club, living the dream of thousands of youngsters across the globe and ending his spell with Los Blancos at the top.

Real Madrid confirm Nacho Fernandez to leave

In an era stacked with options like Sergio Ramos, Pepe and Raphael Varane, Nacho was mostly present as a rotational option in the squad. But, his importance grew rapidly as the stars of the 2010s left the club over the past few years.

All in all, Nacho played 364 games for Real Madrid across all competitions, winning six Champions League titles, four LaLiga titles, five FIFA Club World Cups, two Copa del Rey titles, four UEFA Super Cups and five Spanish Supercopa titles. And in the process, becoming one of the most decorated players in the history of the club.

Staying in Europe was never an option for the 34-year-old, as he didn’t want to face his boyhood club in any competition again. As a result, he has chosen one final spell in Qatar before potentially hanging up his boots.

Which other players are leaving Real Madrid this summer?

Toni Kroos, Joselu
