Mumbai Just Got Its Own Slice of Hollywood Magic, Courtesy of The Odyssey

Some premieres come and go. This one felt different. Christopher Nolan, Matt Damon, and Tom Holland touched down in Mumbai this week, turning the city into a global pit stop for their upcoming epic, The Odyssey — and fans couldn’t have asked for a better welcome.

A Long-Awaited Homecoming for Nolan

Mumbai wasn’t a random choice. Nolan revealed he’d actually wanted to premiere Tenet here back in 2020, but the pandemic had other plans. This time, nothing stopped him. The city hosted an exclusive first-look screening in Lower Parel on July 10, 2026 — making it the film’s very first public screening anywhere in the world, ahead of stops in London, Paris, and New York.

At the press conference the next day, Nolan didn’t hold back on his admiration for Indian audiences, praising their deep passion for the movie-going experience.

What Hollywood ‘s The Odyssey Brings to the Table

Based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey follows the legendary hero’s long journey home — a story that’s inspired storytellers for centuries. Nolan’s cinematic take stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o. The film releases worldwide on July 17, 2026.

Damon spoke about the weight of playing Odysseus, calling it his one shot at doing a David Lean-style epic. Holland, visibly moved by the crowd’s energy, greeted fans with a namaste and called the film a heartfelt tribute to cinema itself.

Why This Visit Matters

India’s love for cinema rarely goes unnoticed by Hollywood anymore, and this visit only cements that. Big directors bringing world premieres to Mumbai signals something bigger — Indian audiences are no longer an afterthought in global release strategies; they’re part of the plan from day one.
