Mumbai City FC defeated Chennaiyin FC 5-3 at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata after 120 minutes of football to advance to the semi-finals of the 2022 Durand Cup. The new signing for the Islanders, Greg Stewart, scored a hat-trick as they were able to earn a hard fought win.
Regulation time ended 2-2, with Jockson Dhas finding the net in the 88th minute for the two teams to finish level. However, the additional half an hour saw the former ISL champions dominate the match and put three goals past their opponents.
Mumbai City FC advance to Durand Cup semifinals
Greg Stewart opened the scoring for the Sky Blues at the 40th minute from the penalty spot. But, Petar Sliskovic leveled things up at the hour mark, directing a header past Phurba Lachenpa. Mumbai City were back in the lead thanks to Lallianzuala Chhangte in the 78th minute, but Jockson ensured that the game wasn’t over there.
Chhangte scored again shortly after the restart, while Greg Stewart bagged another couple to complete his hat-trick. Chennaiyin were able to pull one back in extra time, but the deficit was simply too much at that point.
Mumbai City FC will be facing Mohammedan Sporting on Wednesday in the semi-finals of the competition, at the same venue.
