As the IPL draws near, fans are intrigued by MS Dhoni’s potential captaincy plans and the leadership transition within the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). According to former teammate Ambati Rayudu, Dhoni might consider relinquishing some of his captaincy duties in the upcoming IPL 2024 season.
Rayudu, who retired from cricket recently and will be commentating for Star Sports during the tournament, suggests that Dhoni could leverage the new ‘Impact Player’ rule to share the captaincy load.

Impacting a Smooth Transition with MS Dhoni’s Strategic Approach
With the introduction of the ‘Impact Player’ rule, teams now have the option to substitute a player after the 14th over of each innings. Ambati Rayudu suggests that MS Dhoni could strategically utilize this rule to delegate captaincy duties during the middle overs, potentially grooming a future leader for CSK.
This speculation arises after Dhoni’s successful return to the CSK captaincy role in 2022, following Ravindra Jadeja’s short-lived stint. Despite leading CSK to their fifth IPL title last year, questions linger about the long-term leadership given Dhoni’s age (42).
Rayudu Confident in Dhoni’s Unwavering Commitment to CSK: A Transition Year Ahead?
Rayudu expressed confidence in Dhoni’s unwavering commitment to CSK, stating that injuries are unlikely to keep him off the field. He also highlighted Dhoni’s meticulous approach to player selection, maintaining a consistent group of 12-13 players throughout the season.
Regarding Dhoni’s batting position, Rayudu hinted that Dhoni might not opt for a top-order role, possibly opening doors for younger talents to shine.
Discussing with Star Sports about the possibility of Dhoni passing on the captaincy to someone else and leveraging the new impact player rule to his advantage, Rayudu mentioned:
“With the impact player rule, he can take a back seat and promote someone to captain their side in the middle. So this year might be a transition year for CSK if it’s his last year, if he decides to play for a few more years, I think he would be the captain. I would personally like him to see as a captain.”
The former CSK batter also highlighted MS Dhoni’s resilience, noting that nothing, not even injury, can deter him. Rayudu recalled how Dhoni played through the last season with an injured knee. Praising his former skipper, he said:
“I think if he has decided to play this season and if he is even 10% fit, he will definitely play the full season and knowing him, injury will not keep him out of the game and he has played through many injuries. Even during last season he was playing with a very bad knee injury, so I don’t think anything will stop him from playing this full season.”
As the IPL draws closer, speculation surrounding Dhoni’s captaincy decisions and CSK’s leadership transition continues to captivate fans’ interest.
Kuldeep Yadav Longs for MS Dhoni’s Guiding Presence Behind the Stumps
India spinner Kuldeep Yadav expressed his longing for former captain MS Dhoni’s irreplaceable presence behind the stumps while representing the national team.
Although the left-arm wrist-spinner didn’t have the opportunity to play Test cricket under Dhoni’s captaincy, he flourished in white-ball formats under Dhoni’s guidance from 2017 until the 2019 ODI World Cup semifinal.
Reflecting on his cricket journey, Kuldeep emphasized how Dhoni’s strategic acumen and wicketkeeping skills significantly boosted his performance on the field. “I wished he had played more because it made our job easier when we were bowling. Following Dhoni’s retirement, my bowling performance declined,” Kuldeep shared in an exclusive interview with The Indian Express.
“It happens when a person guides you and that person’s influence is not there anymore, then suddenly everything is on your shoulders. It takes time for you to react to the situation… that probably happened to me. Then slowly you understand and become self-reliant.”
“(Yuzvendra) Chahal and I really enjoyed when Mahi bhai was keeping wickets, he used to give lots of ideas. I didn’t have to think too much when I was bowling. I just had to bowl and he would even adjust the fields. No doubt the time I had with Mahi bhai on the field and even off the field was great.”
Despite announcing his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020, MS Dhoni continued to grace the IPL stage with his presence, leading the Chennai Super Kings to their fourth and fifth titles in 2021 and 2023, respectively. As he prepares for his 17th IPL season, Dhoni, at the age of 42, will become one of the league’s oldest players when he captains CSK in the IPL 2024 opener against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai on March 22.
