Great news for Minecraft fans! Mojang Studios, the game’s developer, has finally unveiled a native PlayStation 5 version, bringing the beloved sandbox title in line with its counterparts on Xbox Series X/S. This new version is currently in a preview stage, but it offers exciting upgrades for PS5 players.

Level Up Your Minecraft Experience on PS5

The most significant improvement with the PS5 version lies in its ability to leverage the console’s powerful hardware.

Players can now expect native 4K resolution support, allowing for stunningly crisp visuals. Additionally, the render distance and anti-aliasing settings have been bumped up, resulting in smoother gameplay and a sharper overall presentation.

These enhancements match the features already available in Minecraft on Xbox Series X/S, creating a more consistent experience across next-generation platforms.

Ray Tracing on Hold, But Testing is Live!

While some fans might have hoped for the inclusion of ray tracing technology (which Microsoft previously teased), there’s no mention of it in this initial PS5 preview.

However, there’s plenty to explore in the new version! PS4 players who own Minecraft can jump into the testing phase right now. By navigating to “Settings” within the game and selecting “Preview” on their PS5, they’ll gain access to this early build.

What to Expect in the PS5 Preview

This preview version comes packed with the recently released “Tricky Trials” update, offering players a fresh wave of content to conquer. However, multiplayer functionality is currently limited to PS4 and PS5 users.

The one exception is playing on Minecraft Realms, which allows for cross-play with players on other platforms. It’s important to note that the Minecraft Store isn’t accessible within the preview build.

Why a Native PS5 Version?

In a blog post outlining their decision, Mojang explained that the native PS5 version aims to “make the game run more effectively on the PS5’s hardware.” This translates to smoother performance, potentially faster loading times, and a more optimized experience overall.

Minecraft: A Timeless Classic

Minecraft remains the king of video games when it comes to sales figures. With a staggering 300 million copies sold since its early access launch in 2009, it holds the title of the best-selling video game of all time. This enduring popularity is a testament to the game’s simple yet addictive gameplay, boundless creativity, and constant stream of updates.

Even after 15 years, Minecraft continues to captivate players of all ages. The decision to forego a sequel seems wise, considering the game’s massive and consistently engaged player base, as evidenced by the 120 million monthly players reported by Xbox boss Phil Spencer in March 2023.

The Future of Minecraft on PS5

The PS5 preview signifies Mojang’s commitment to bringing Minecraft up to speed on next-generation consoles. While the initial focus is on performance and resolution improvements, future updates could introduce additional features that capitalize on the PS5’s unique capabilities.

With the official release on the horizon, PS5 players can look forward to an enhanced Minecraft experience that unlocks the full potential of their powerful console.
