Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 to sport AMD’s Ryzen 4000 series CPUs

We have already seen many benchmark results of the upcoming Surface Laptop 4 line-up, made available in the 13.5-inch and 15-inch display sizes. However, if you expect some new specs, such as AMD’s newest Ryzen 5000 CPUs, it’s better not to keep high-hopes.

As we have confirmed that Surface Laptop 4 models will have the older Ryzen 4000 chips, there will also be some Intel-fueled models. According to WinFuture, the Surface Laptop 4 will feature two Ryzen 4000 CPUs, depending on what configuration you want.

  • Ryzen 5 4680U (2.0GHz base clock speed, with 4.4GHz boost frequency)
  • Ryzen 7 4980U (unknown clock speed details)

It is certainly disappointing that Microsoft will not use AMD’s latest and greatest CPUs, but still, we expect the CPUs offered in the line-up to be 6-core and 8-core chips. However, the new Surface Laptop 4 line will deliver some serious performance gains compared to the Ryzen 3000 series machines thanks to the increase in core count and architecture differences.

According to reports, the TDP will be maintained at 15W. It might not be possible for Microsoft to increase the maximum thermal limit for the Ryzen 4000 CPUs since the Surface Laptop 4 might not feature adequate cooling.

Coming to the Intel models, reports suggest that they will be available with up to 32GB RAM, whereas the AMD chip versions will be limited to 16GB RAM.

All the models, irrespective of the CPU and screen size, will have the 49Wh battery, so it is better to go with the 13.5-inch version as it will be more power-efficient. Pricing details are not available but considering Microsoft; its new product will certainly hit our pockets hard.
