Michael Edwards, the former Liverpool executive, is nearing an agreement for a significant role within Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which would entail him overseeing the football operations of Liverpool, making a return to the club.
Liverpool is currently undergoing a major transition period following the announcement of manager Jurgen Klopp’s impending departure this summer, along with the departure of key staff members. Jorg Schmadtke, the sporting director, has already left the club.

Should Edwards accept FSG’s offer, it is anticipated that Richard Hughes, who recently departed as technical director of Bournemouth, will assume the role of sporting director at Liverpool. Initially, Edwards declined FSG’s proposal but the US-based group persisted in their pursuit. Now, Edwards is on the verge of joining FSG in a broader capacity that extends beyond Liverpool, although he would still have a significant role in the club’s operations.
While the agreement has not been finalized, discussions are progressing, and a definitive resolution is expected to be reached early next week. This move signifies a significant development in the restructuring of Liverpool’s football operations and the broader strategies of FSG.
Michael Edwards played a pivotal role in implementing Fenway Sports Group’s (FSG) data-driven business model, which proved to be self-sustaining. Edwards fostered a strong relationship with FSG president Gordon, and his approach of removing emotion from decision-making processes garnered admiration from the owners.
One of Edwards’ strengths was his willingness to challenge and question senior figures, including Jurgen Klopp, which resonated with FSG’s philosophy. When Edwards announced his decision to step down at the end of his contract in 2022, FSG was reluctant to lose him.
However, with Edwards not inclined to return to his former role as sporting director, FSG had to extend a broader role with increased responsibilities to retain him. Amidst significant changes on the horizon for Liverpool, particularly with Klopp’s departure and other staff transitions, FSG sees Edwards as the ideal candidate to establish the necessary structure and personnel to navigate the club through this transition period.
