These financial disagreements sparked rumours that the striker could terminate his contract early, though no transfer materialised and Corinthians remained keen to resolve matters amicably.

Ultimately, it was Depay’s personal commitment to the club that proved decisive. To make the renewal possible, the player made a significant effort to stay and accepted important changes to the financial conditions of his contract.

Depay, who wears the number 10 shirt, agreed to reduce his monthly salary and to distribute — across the term of the new contract — the debt of around R$44 million that Corinthians owes him.
