If you’ve been wondering why flagship phones feel increasingly out of reach while OLED laptops are suddenly everywhere, the answer is the same for both: memory cost inflation. A new report from Counterpoint Research lays it out clearly — rising component prices are reshaping the entire OLED industry in 2026, and smartphones are bearing the brunt of it.

Global OLED panel shipments are projected to stay flat year-on-year in 2026, a sharp downgrade from the 3% YoY growth recorded in 2025. The culprit is a projected 3% YoY decline in smartphone OLED panel shipments — a segment that has historically been the engine of the entire OLED market.

Why Smartphones Are Struggling?

The core issue is the Bill of Materials (BOM) — the total cost of components that go into building a phone. When memory prices rise, mid-range and budget smartphones feel it hardest, because margins in those tiers are already thin. Manufacturers are being forced to make uncomfortable choices: cut OLED panels from affordable models, reduce production volumes, or absorb losses.

According to Counterpoint Research Senior Analyst Tom Someya, rising memory prices are shifting OLED growth toward foldable and premium flexible OLED devices, while rigid OLED demand declines as OEMs rebalance their portfolios. In plain terms: expect fewer OLED options at the ₹15,000–₹25,000 price band, and more aggressive competition at the premium end.

Where OLED Is Actually Booming?

While phones struggle, IT devices are having a moment. OLED monitors are projected to grow 45% YoY — the strongest expansion of any segment. OLED notebook PCs are close behind at 33%, driven significantly by Apple’s anticipated transition to OLED displays for MacBook Pro models and the continued rise of premium AI PCs. Tablets are also growing at 13%.

The reason IT devices are absorbing cost pressure better comes down to price points. A premium laptop or monitor commands a high average selling price, which gives manufacturers the headroom to absorb rising memory and component costs without gutting margins. Phones — especially mid-range ones — simply don’t have that luxury.

As Counterpoint’s Associate Director David Naranjo noted, smartphone OLED demand is softening precisely because higher-ASP IT applications like notebooks and monitors can better absorb rising component costs.

OLED technology, which uses organic compounds to emit light directly and delivers superior contrast and colour accuracy over traditional LCD panels, has been steadily expanding from phones into laptops, monitors, and cars over the past several years. 2026 marks a notable inflection point in that migration.

FAQs

Why are OLED smartphones declining in 2026 despite being popular?

Memory cost inflation is raising the Bill of Materials for smartphones, forcing manufacturers to cut OLED panels from budget and mid-range models and reduce overall production volumes.

Which OLED devices are growing the fastest in 2026?

OLED monitors lead with 45% projected YoY growth, followed by notebook PCs at 33% and tablets at 13%, all benefiting from higher selling prices that absorb rising component costs more comfortably than smartphones.
