I know you may ask who uses hard drive disks these days? Especially when a huge percentage of the workforce switched to online. Well, HDDs or hard drives are still in the market because it’s cheap and can offer more storage compared to an SSD. If speed is the only issue, the solution is already found.
Seagate was closely working with Microsoft since the end of 2017 to develop a multi-actuator technology and finally, come up with its Match.2 multi-actuator technology. Here Seagate added two actuators, instead of one, to double up both the sequential and random read/write speeds. And the first product with this new technology is Seagate Exos 2X14 which has a sustained transfer rate of 524MB/s. This figure shows that it’s faster than the earlier Exos 15E900 and that’s why the Exos 2X14 is the fastest HDD in the world for now.
The total capacity of the Exos 2X14 is 14TB. Actually, Seagate fused two 7TB HDDs in a hermetically sealed helium-filled 3.5-inch chassis. In the case of features, the world’s fastest hard disk has a spindle speed of 7200 RPM, a 256MB multisegmented catch, and a single port SAS 12GB/s interface.
When plugging in, the Exos 2X14 shows as two logical drives can be addressed individually. The fabulous speed comes with a cost of high power consumption. The hard disk can consume up to 13.5W under heady loads, which is obviously higher than usuals. However, the data centers can go with Seagate’s PowerBalance capability to reduce power consumption. But to do that, they need to compromise up to 50% sequential read/write speed and 5%-10% random read/write speed.
In the end, the Seagate Exos 2X14 is currently listed on its website, limited for selected customers. This one is mainly for the data centers. There is a very high chance that we will get the multi-actuator technology in other hard disk drives which will be available for normal users.
