The latest market tracking report by Counterpoint Research for August 2021 is here which shows the market conditions of the smartphone SoC (encompassing 5G baseband chipsets as well as application processors).
This report covers the second quarter of this year (2Q021) and also indicates that MediaTek is proving earlier projections of unparalleled success in the same 12 months true thus far, meaning that the Taiwanese SoC manufacturer is on the rise.
MediaTek has posted a 43% share of this market, which is up from 37% in 1Q2021 and 28% in the same quarter of 2020. in second place is Qualcomm which came in at 28% (or 4% less year-on-year (YoY)), and finally at third place is Apple with a flat YoY share of 14%.
The Cupertino, California-based tech giant was followed by a surprising entrant in 4th place which is secured by Unisoc, the company that grew its share by 5% YoY to 9%, thus taking the spot occupied by Samsung in 2Q2020.
Samsung went into decline by reaching 7% from 12% last year, however, this is still better when compared to that of HiSilicon. Huawei suffered heavily under the restrictions placed on it by the US administration and the company’s mobile chipset-specific division had a 16% share in 2Q2020. But, according to the recent report, the share dwindled to 3%.
The Taiwanese chip manufacturer, MediaTek, posted amazing results, and this development is attributed to the presence of its SoCs in the low- to mid-range 5G smartphone market, although it is still doing business in the 4G/LTE space at present.
However, Qualcomm led the 5G baseband sector in 2Q2021 and was reported to have a 55% share compared to 29% from the previous year. The report also states that Qualcomm was generally more exposed to the ongoing supply-chain crisis than MediaTek for the latest quarter.
