The Snapdragon X Elite from Qualcomm will be featured in several Windows laptops, while MediaTek is getting ready to introduce its offering in the same category. MediaTek, which currently competes with Qualcomm in the Android flagship smartphone market, is a step closer to issuing a rival to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite as early as late 2025, Reuters reported recently.
MediaTek to challenge Snapdragon X Elite
This is of course something we reported recently based on a leak, and while MediaTek did not release any information on its future SoC for PCs and some other laptop categories, there have been rumors that Qualcomm exclusivity deal. The shift could enable MediaTek to get a foot in the door in the laptop chipset market. It seems that MediaTek is working with NVIDIA on creating an answer to the Snapdragon X Elite, which could be based on the TSMC cutting-edge 3nm technology to offer slightly better performance and efficiency.
In particular, while MediaTek and NVIDIA do work on chipsets for handhelds and portable game consoles, those aren’t the same as what they expect to follow a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite-challenging product. This strategic independence highlights MediaTek’s desire to grow its bottom line without direct ties to any of the players involved in this collaboration.
Finally, the historically underappreciated MediaTek also smashes it up with a leading position in smartphone chipset shipment, in Q1 2024. The milestone places MediaTek as a realistic option other than Qualcomm when looking for a cost-effective chip that can rival Qualcomm’s offerings in terms of sheer performance and power efficiency.
However, concrete details regarding MediaTek’s upcoming chipset’s capabilities remain undisclosed. Industry observers anticipate that MediaTek’s entry into the laptop chipset market could introduce competitive dynamics, potentially offering OEMs and consumers alternative choices that balance performance and cost-effectiveness.
As the landscape evolves, MediaTek’s move into the laptop chipset domain reflects its strategic ambition to diversify and challenge incumbents like Qualcomm. The market will closely watch for further developments and performance benchmarks as MediaTek prepares to bring its competitive alternative to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite to market by late 2025.
