After one year on the Epic Game Store, in December 2020, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries was released on Steam and GoG. Then Cyberpunk was delayed to December, so developer Piranha Games also decided to delay the wider PC release of MechWarrior 5 until the 2021 spring.
At that moment, it looked like a smart move, but it was truly unnecessary. Cyberpunk 2020 became the biggest disaster of 2020, but Piranha Games can not really be blamed for wanting to avoid getting crushed by what was once the most popular game of all time.
Piranha Games announced that they would take the extra time to make MechWarrior 5 more fine, develop a new DLC that’s going to be launched simultaneously, and port the game to Xbox. Meanwhile, the Swedish holding company, the EG7, acquired the Piranha Games, which helped massively keep MechWarrior 5 on the track for its planned spring release.
“We are very excited to also be able to give Xbox and Steam players a good dose of MechWarrior fun,” said EG7 CEO Robin Flodin. “It is also great to be able to present yet another example of the EG7 companies working together to bring a world-class title to market.”
It suggests that MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries will launch alongside its first DLC on Steam, GoG, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on May 27. This will feature the first new MechWarrior game on an Xbox console since the MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf. It seems MechWarrior 5 has to face so much competition due to other releases like Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Subnautica: Below Zero, and THQ’s Biomutant in May.
