Marvel’s Hawkeye is widely regarded as one of the MCU’s finest Phase 4 offerings — but it almost never happened the way we know it. In a shocking behind-the-scenes revelation, the beloved Disney+ series was completely rewritten less than two weeks before cameras rolled. Yes, really.
The Last-Minute Scramble That Saved Hawkeye
Writer Andrew Guest revealed in a candid interview on The Watch podcast that he received an emergency call from Joe Russo — someone he’d previously collaborated with on Community — asking for urgent help. Marvel’s Executive of Production & Development, Trinh Tran, delivered the blunt message: “We start shooting in New York in a week and a half, and we want to rewrite the whole thing.”
That’s not a typo. Ten days. Full rewrite. No pressure, right?
Guest admitted he was essentially Marvel’s last resort: “I was literally the last call they could make to anybody.” The show had already gone through a writer’s room and multiple rewrites before this point. But something still wasn’t clicking.
What Was Actually Wrong with the Original Script?
| Problem | Impact |
|---|---|
| Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop written too young | Broke the mentor-student dynamic |
| Lack of chemistry between Clint & Kate | Weakened the emotional core of the show |
| Too many unnecessary plot twists | Made the story bloated and confusing |
These weren’t minor fixes. These were fundamental story problems that, left unresolved, could have sunk the entire series.
The Rewrite That Changed Everything
Once Guest came aboard and the team got to work, the turnaround was remarkable. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always operated at a breakneck pace, but this was next-level chaos turned into gold.
The result? Hawkeye earned a 92% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and introduced Kate Bishop as one of Phase 4’s most beloved new characters. The Clint-Kate dynamic became one of the MCU’s most heartfelt mentor relationships — and it almost didn’t exist in this form.
