Max Dowman has written his name into English football history. Arsenal teenager Max Dowman has become the youngest player to win the Premier League title, adding another record to his collection in a remarkable season.

How Dowman Qualified For The Medal

At just 16 years and 139 days old, Dowman breaks the all-time record for the youngest Premier League champion. The Gunners secured their first Premier League title in 22 years on Tuesday, as Manchester City’s draw at Bournemouth confirmed the north London club’s status as champions. He surpasses Phil Foden, who was 17 when he won the title with Manchester City in 2017/18. The gap is not even close — Dowman is nearly two full years younger than Foden was when he collected his first title medal, making this one of the most emphatic record-breaks in Premier League history.

Having already played five games this season, Dowman qualifies to pick up a Premier League winner’s medal when Arsenal are presented with the trophy following their final day match against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday. Dowman will receive one of the 40 commemorative medals given to the Premier League champions, as he has made more than the minimum five league appearances during the season. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has carefully integrated Dowman into the first team this season, with the midfielder making all five of his Premier League appearances from the bench.

A Season Of Records — Not Just One

The title medal is the latest milestone in a season where Dowman has shattered age records at virtually every level. His trajectory across just 10 months is unlike anything the Premier League has seen before. This marks another record for the 16-year-old midfielder following his debut in August 2025, which made him the youngest player in Premier League history at 15 years and 235 days old.

On 4 November 2025, he appeared as a 72nd-minute substitute during Arsenal’s 3–0 away victory against Slavia Prague in the league phase of the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League, becoming the youngest player to appear in the competition at 15 years and 308 days old, surpassing the previous record set by Youssoufa Moukoko who was 16 years and 18 days old when he made his UCL debut.

On 14 March, Dowman came on as a substitute for Martín Zubimendi and scored in the 97th minute during Arsenal’s 2–0 home victory against Everton to become the youngest goalscorer in both the Premier League and the club’s history. He achieved this feat at 16 years and 73 days old, breaking the previous record held by James Vaughan from 2005.

From Billericay To Premier League Champion

Dowman was born on 31 December 2009 in Chelmsford, Essex. He grew up in a family of Arsenal supporters. He is very distantly related to George Male who played for Arsenal either side of World War II. Dowman joined the youth academy of Arsenal in 2015, following time in the youth set-up at Billericay Town. He started playing with their Arsenal U18s in September 2023 at the age of 13.

Dowman has already outgrown his age groups, producing standout performances in the U18 Premier League last season (15 games, 15 goals and five assists) and for the England youth sides, often against opponents three to four years older. Dowman, who is still in school, was 14 when he was asked by Arteta to train with the senior team in December last year, and he starred on the club’s preseason tour of Asia in matches against AC Milan and Newcastle.

What His Manager And Coaches Have Said

Arteta has been consistently protective and admiring of Dowman in equal measure. Arteta said: “For him everything is natural, for him everything is okay, it’s the way he plays. I think that’s the secret, that he doesn’t make a big fuss of it, he just does what he does best, which is to play football, to play football with a lot of courage and determination. Today again he’s shown some incredible skill, some capacity to run past players at that level in the Premier League at 15.”

After Dowman’s record-breaking goal against Everton, Arteta decided to praise Max Dowman’s talent: “It is not only the goal that he scored, [Dowman] changed the game. Every time he got the ball, he makes things happen and we are more of a threat.”

Former Arsenal academy coach Temisan Williams, who worked with Dowman as an U11, identified his qualities early. “Ball-carrying has been his super strength all the way through,” says Williams. “I got to coach Max for the whole season when he was an U11s player and right from the get-go I was like: ‘Okay, there’s something very special about this young man.'”

On his mentality, Williams said: “He has champion mentality in bucket loads.”

Playing Style: What Makes Dowman Special

Comfortable playing in a number of positions, Dowman has been used as an attacking midfielder and as a traditional ’10’ for Arsenal’s youth teams, but can also play as a right winger. He is skilful, energetic and naturally gifted in the final third and is able to cut through defences with a precise and accurate pass. Technically, Dowman’s set-piece delivery stands out. He has been entrusted with corner and free-kick duties at youth level.

Dowman plays primarily as an attacking midfielder or wide playmaker — most often from the right, cutting in onto his stronger left foot — and excels in virtually every phase relevant to his role and style. Dowman’s progression with the ball is outstanding: He consistently evades pressure at pace, identifies space in the final third, and has the vision to release his teammates with passes of both timing and precision.

In his first senior start (Carabao Cup vs Brighton), Dowman put in an impressive performance, attempting nine dribbles and completing five of them — more than anyone on the pitch — as well winning a game-high nine duels.

Where He Sits Among The Youngest Premier League Winners Ever

Here, we look at the next 10 youngest players who have won the Premier League, making at least five appearances in a title-winning campaign.

Clichy held the record as the Premier League’s youngest title-winning player for 14 years before Foden and Diaz surpassed him in 2017/18. The Frenchman was Ashley Cole’s backup at left-back during Arsenal’s “Invincibles” campaign in 2003/04.

International Honours Already Building

Dowman made his England U16 and England U17 debuts in 2024. He was included in the squad for the 2025 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. He featured as a starter in all three of England’s games, including a 4–2 win against the Czech Republic, where he scored the opening goal. Dowman made his England U19 debut during a 2–0 win over Ukraine at Pinatar Arena on 3 September 2025. Dowman became the youngest-ever goalscorer for the England U19 side, beating Ryan Sessegnon’s record from 2016, in a 7–0 win against Wales.

What’s Next For Dowman

On 30 January 2026, Arsenal announced that Dowman had signed a pre-contract agreement with the club that would lead to him signing professional terms when he turns 17. That means a full professional contract will be signed on or after December 31, 2026 (his 17th birthday). Unlike the situation surrounding Ethan Nwaneri, Mikel Arteta reportedly plans to keep the 16-year-old talent fully integrated within the senior squad, allowing him to continue adapting to the team’s dynamics.

Legend Rio Ferdinand has already publicly praised Dowman, further suggesting that his long-term continuity with the Gunners is viewed as almost certain. Already generating a buzz across the youth football scene, Dowman is arguably the most promising Hale End graduate since Bukayo Saka, a fact that Premier League rivals and Europe’s top clubs are perfectly aware of.
