Arsenal have reached a total agreement with MLS franchise New England Revolution for the transfer of Matt Turner. The player will be joining the North London outfit in the summer, and will be available from the 2022/23 season.
He is set to be the replacement for Bernd Leno, who is expected to leave the club at the end of the season. Newcastle United have been linked with his signature for a few weeks, and are seemingly the frontrunners in the race for his signature.
Matt Turner to replace Bernd Leno in the summer
Leno joined Arsenal from Bayer Leverkusen in 2018, and has been their number 1 up until the arrival of Aaron Ramsdale. The Englishman is now the preferred option for Mikel Arteta, and he has repaid the faith shown in him by the manager by performing very well between the sticks.
The German goalkeeper will only have one year left on his contract by the time the season ends. And Arsenal will be looking to sell him for a fee and make room for Matt Turner.
The USMNT international will be departing as a club record sale, bringing in $7 million guaranteed, with $2 million in add-ons. The 27-year-old has been in the MLS for the entirety of his career, and will be moving to the biggest league in the world in a matter of a few months.
This will take Arsenal another step ahead in rebuilding the team from the ground up, and moving on fringe players as well.
