“Materesa”: Nana’s New Netflix Thriller Is Now in Production

Netflix’s newest Korean psychological thriller, Materesa (working title), has officially begun filming, and early details suggest this could be one of the platform’s most intriguing K-drama additions yet.

What Materesa Is About

The series follows Ma Teresa, a brilliant but coldly misanthropic criminal psychologist and professor who investigates unsolved murder cases while fighting to reclaim a university once owned by her mother. Beneath the story’s crime-investigation surface lies a deeper narrative about power struggles within academic institutions and private foundations — a genre blend that promises both procedural intrigue and personal stakes.

Materesa: Overview

Meet the Cast

Nana as Ma Teresa — Despite her name suggesting warmth, Ma Teresa is anything but. A genius who inherited both intelligence and striking looks from her parents, she uses her abilities purely to serve her own ambitions and reclaim what was taken from her family. Nana, known for roles in Glitch and Mask Girl, continues her streak of intense, complex Netflix characters.

Kim Dan as Park Seol — Ma Teresa’s teaching assistant, whose polite, likable exterior hides a secret. Popular among students and faculty alike, Park Seol’s charm masks deeper motives that unfold as the story progresses.

Jung Gun Joo as Yoo A-ram — A prosecutor and Ma Teresa’s long-time friend, who grows increasingly wary of Park Seol’s closeness to her as the investigation deepens.

Why This Series Has Potential

With Queen of Tears director Jang Young Woo at the helm and a writing team behind hits like The Guest and Bulgasal: Immortal Souls, Materesa brings serious pedigree to its blend of crime drama and institutional power struggle. The setup — genius protagonist, hidden agendas, and slow-burn emotional entanglements — echoes the appeal of psychological thriller dramas that have found global audiences through Netflix’s K-drama slate.

When Will Materesa Release?

With filming running through December 2026, a release sometime before the end of 2027 seems likely, though Netflix has yet to confirm an official date.
