Chelsea star Mason Mount talked about his appreciation for talented Indian cricketers Shubman Gill and Washington Sundar, calling them ‘exciting’ on episode 9 of Certified Chelsea.
“I like the Indian cricket team. Whenever I have time, I watch highlights,” the 22-year-old said. “India has good, young cricketers coming through – Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar; two exciting players.”
Mount has been Chelsea’s brightest and most consistent talent this season and was awarded the 20/21 Chelsea player of the season award for his performances. The young Englishman contributed 6 goals and assists in the Premier League, and also lifted the Champions League by assisting the goal that would win them the coveted trophy.
He also acknowledged the support from Chelsea’s vast Indian fanbase on the program:
“Thank you. It means so much, especially during this difficult time. Stay strong, we will get through it and I hope to see them back at the Bridge.”
Mount came through the Chelsea academy, and much like his fellow academy graduates, spent numerous spells out on loan. He was first loaned out to Dutch club Vitesse, followed by Derby County in the Championship, and was given the opportunity to play in the first team by Frank Lampard, whom he also worked with at Derby.
While he was criticised in the beginning of his Chelsea career as being favoured by Lampard, he has silenced his haters by improving even more under Thomas Tuchel, and cementing his place in the starting lineup despite the change in management.
