Marvel Studios has unveiled a fresh teaser for Thunderbolts, and it’s unlike anything the franchise has done before. Breaking away from the usual high-energy action montages and grand orchestral scores, this preview leans into a distinctly indie aesthetic, highlighting the film’s creative ties to acclaimed A24 productions.

The teaser, first revealed by Letterboxd, intercuts shots of Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in their Marvel roles with their notable A24 credits. Alongside the star-studded connections, the clip emphasizes the contributions of key crew members who have previously worked on A24’s most celebrated films.

A24 Meets Marvel: A Bold New Direction for the MCU

Rather than focusing on explosive battle sequences or CGI spectacles, the teaser plays out with slick techno beats and stylish title cards. Marvel’s signature opening logo is even given an A24-inspired twist, reinforcing the studio’s attempt to blend the two cinematic worlds.

Key highlights from the teaser include:

Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova) – Previously starred in Midsommar
Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier) – Known for A Different Man
Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Valentina Allegra de Fontaine) – Starred in You Hurt My Feelings
Harry Yoon (Editor) – Worked on Minari
Jake Schreier (Director) & Lee Sung Jin, Joanna Calo (Co-writers) – Behind the hit series Beef
Andrew Droz Palermo (Cinematographer) – Previously shot The Green Knight
Grace Yun (Production Designer) – Known for Hereditary
Son Lux (Composers) – Created the award-winning score for Everything Everywhere All at Once

This teaser positions Thunderbolts as an MCU film with a distinctly indie feel, boasting a pedigree that sets it apart from previous Marvel outings.

Director’s Vision: A Unique Blend of Genres

Director Jake Schreier collaborated closely on the teaser and previously teased the film’s unconventional approach at last year’s Comic-Con.

“The goal that Kevin [Feige, president of Marvel Studios] set at the beginning was to go in and try to make this different,” Schreier explained. “If you can imagine a Marvel movie from people who make that kind of work, and imagine where those tones could meet, then I feel like that’s what we hope we’ve made.”

Pugh echoed this sentiment, describing the film as “this quite badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes” (via Empire Magazine). It’s clear Marvel is fully embracing this angle, emphasizing the film’s unique cinematic influences.

A24’s Playful Response

Interestingly, A24 was not officially involved in the marketing strategy, but the studio took notice.

In response to the teaser, A24’s official X account playfully shared a meme of Alexa Demie’s Euphoria character, Maddy, saying, “Wait, is this f—ing play about us?” The cheeky acknowledgment only fueled excitement around the film’s indie influences.

Cast, Story, and Release Date

Thunderbolts is set to bring together an ensemble cast of reformed Marvel villains forced into a covert U.S. government operation. Joining Pugh, Stan, and Louis-Dreyfus are:

David Harbour (Red Guardian) – Returning from Black Widow
Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster) – Last seen in Black Widow
Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost) – From Ant-Man and the Wasp
Wyatt Russell (John Walker / U.S. Agent) – From The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
Lewis Pullman (Bob, a new character) – Known for Top Gun: Maverick

Produced by Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, Thunderbolts is based on Kurt Busiek’s comic series of the same name. Executive producers include Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, Jason Tamez, and Scarlett Johansson.

The film is slated for release on May 2, 2025, and will be a major addition to Marvel’s evolving cinematic landscape.

With its unconventional approach and indie-inspired aesthetic, Thunderbolts is shaping up to be one of the most distinctive Marvel films to date. By tapping into the creative strengths of A24 veterans, the studio appears ready to experiment with storytelling and style in a way that could redefine expectations for the MCU. Whether this fusion of indie sensibilities and blockbuster spectacle will resonate with audiences remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—Marvel is not afraid to shake things up.
