Marvel Wanted Kraven Three Times, and Sony Said No Every Time

Imagine pitching the perfect villain three separate times and hearing “no” each time. That is the story of Marvel Studios and Kraven the Hunter.

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day breaking box office records, writers and directors are finally talking about the ideas that never made it to screen. Kraven keeps coming up, and it’s a fascinating story for anyone following the MCU on TechnoSports.

Why Was Kraven Off-Limits?

The reason is simple: rights. Sony owns the film rights to Spider-Man’s supporting characters, and Kraven, a classic Spider-Man villain, belonged to Sony’s own franchise. Marvel could ask, but Sony held the keys.

Marvel Kraven’s Three Near-Misses

The “Home Alone” Kraven We Never Got

The Brand New Day idea is the one fans can’t stop talking about. According to McKenna, Kraven would have turned New York into a citywide trap for Spider-Man, closer to Home Alone than a typical superhero showdown, with booby traps set across the city.

It sounds like a blast. Instead, the writers pivoted to Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey as the central threat.

Coogler Asked Point Blank

Coogler recalled the exchange on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. He asked Marvel directly whether he could use Kraven in Black Panther, and the request went to Sony, which turned it down. Picture Kraven squaring off against T’Challa in the MCU’s early days.

The Irony Nobody Expected

Sony’s protectiveness didn’t pay off. Its standalone Kraven the Hunter film underperformed at the box office and with audiences, so the years of blocked crossovers sting more in hindsight.

What’s Next for Kraven?

Nothing is confirmed. Brand New Day has moved on to Jean Grey, and Kraven joins Chameleon and the Shadow King on the list of villains the franchise set aside. For more Marvel updates, check our latest entertainment coverage.
