Martin Mull’s Netflix Documentary Will Make You Laugh, Then Quietly Wreck You

You might know him as Gene Parmesan from Arrested Development. Or as a villain in a cartoon you watched as a kid. Netflix’s Who Is Martin Mull? asks you to look past the famous faces and meet the man himself.

According to What’s on Netflix, the film earns a strong 4.5/5. After watching, I get why.

Martin Mull: A Friendship Captured on Camera

The documentary began as Bob Saget’s passion project. In 2018, he sat down with Martin Mull, a comedian he had admired since his teens. After Saget’s death in 2022, director Neil Berkeley picked up the footage and finished the film.

It follows Mull from comedy songwriter to late-night satirist, with warm contributions from his wife, Wendy Haas, and friends like Steve Martin and Patton Oswalt.

Martin Mull: Overview

Painter First, Comedian Second

Here’s the surprise: Mull saw himself as a painter above all else. Much of his comedy career, the film suggests, helped fund his art. His daughter Maggie Mull also shares a sweet story about how drawing became their way of connecting.

Where It Gets Emotional?

Halfway through, the tone shifts. Years of footage show Mull saying goodbye to old friends, and then reflecting on outliving them. He jokes about who might carry his casket, then faces mortality with calm acceptance. It’s funny, honest and a little devastating.

The film closes with Mull’s acoustic performance of Time of My Life, which hits very differently in this context. Keep tissues nearby.

What Could Be Better?

The only real stumble is a few celebrity talking-head cameos, including a Netflix executive, that pull focus from the intimate Saget and Mull conversations. It’s a small complaint about an otherwise moving film.
