Mario Gotze to leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer

Mario Gotze was once touted as the next big thing in football after he scored the winner against Lionel Messi’s Argentina in extra time at the 2014 World Cup final. He latched onto a Schurrle cross to score the only goal of the final and lift the World Cup trophy for Germany.

It seemed Gotze’s career would reach new heights after the World Cup win. He earned a transfer to Bayern Munich but his time at Allianz Arena is better not to be remembered. He failed to cement his place in the starting XI.

Gotze returned to Dortmund once again to build his career but he has failed to do so. Borussia Dortmund head coach Lucien Favre earlier said Gotze doesn’t fit into his system.

Favre told the media before Saturday’s Bundesliga match with Wolfsburg: “Right now, we are playing 3-4-3. So, I have been talking to Mario [Gotze], and unfortunately this is not the right system for him. You must say the truth about this.”

Now it has been confirmed by Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc that Gotze will leave this summer.

Zorc said: “We will part ways with Mario [Gotze] this summer. It was a mutual and respectful decision. He’s a great man.”

Maybe finally Gotze will get game time in his new club and once again he can build on his promising career, as very few players can boast of scoring the winning goal on a World Cup final. He surely has the attributes to be successful in top level of football. He just needs to find the right team in which he fits.
