Mario Gotze has returned to the Bundesliga, joining Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt. The player has signed a three-year deal with Die Adler, and his return has been officially confirmed by the club as well.

Frankfurt activated his €4 million release clause to sign him from PSV Eindhoven, and were the preferred club over Benfica and Inter Miami in the MLS.

“I’m incredibly excited about joining Eintracht Frankfurt,” Mario Götze told the Frankfurt website. “This club have made remarkable progress and have started out on an exciting and ambitious path, on which I can now accompany them.

“From the stadium to the fans to the city, everything is just to my liking. I’m really looking forward to my return to the Bundesliga, as well as the chance to play in the Champions League.”

The attacking midfielder won the 2014 World Cup with Germany, and spent three years between 2013 and 2016 at Bayern before returning to Borussia Dortmund. He left the black and yellow club in 2020, and spent the last two seasons in the Netherlands before finally returning to Germany now.

Eintracht Frankfurt will have a very difficult start to the season, as they take on reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in their season opener. They will be taking on Champions League winners Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup shortly after. But if last season was any proof, they must never be counted out even if they are the underdogs.
