Manchester United defeated Brighton 7-6 on penalties in the semi-finals of the FA Cup to set up a derby against their rivals, City in the finals. Neither team could find the back of the net in the 120 minutes of open play, and the game had to be decided from the spot.

Bruno Fernandes had the best opportunity during a rather cagey first half. The midfielder’s effort went narrowly wide, with not many opportunities being created. However, United had a better half in comparison.

The second half saw Brighton come out with much more conviction. But after an initial offence from them, United were on the attack again. David De Gea was called into making two important saves, denying Pascal Groß and Solly March late in the game.

A similar pattern followed in extra time, with both sides being unable to really threaten in spite of having their share of opportunities.

The penalties were decided on sudden death after Solly March missed, while Victor Lindelof converted to send the Red Devils into the finals.

Erik Ten Hag now has the opportunity to earn a domestic double in his very first season in England, having already secured the Carabao Cup. On the other hand, Brighton’s progression into the semifinals is worthy of remark in itself, showing exactly how impressive a season they are having.
