Manchester United Opts Against Extending Raphael Varane’s Contract by 12 Months

Manchester United has opted not to activate the 12-month contract extension option for Raphael Varane. This decision allows the defender to engage in discussions with international clubs about a potential summer transfer starting on New Year’s Day. The club has chosen not to exercise the option to prolong Raphael Varane’s £340,000-a-week contract.

The current contract of the France international is set to expire at the end of the season. Although the agreement includes a clause allowing Manchester United to automatically extend it, they have chosen not to exercise this option by the 1 January deadline. Despite this, United maintains interest in prolonging Varane’s tenure at Old Trafford and intends to initiate discussions for a new deal in the coming month.

Manchester United Grapples with Varane’s Wages as Contract Extension Decision Looms

Reports indicate that Manchester United finds it challenging to justify the current £340,000-a-week wages of the 30-year-old, especially considering his injury concerns that have limited him to seven Premier League starts this season. Opting not to trigger the extension is in line with the club’s intention to renegotiate Varane’s terms, aiming to bring his wages to a more sustainable level. Additionally, United is working to reduce the salaries of their highest-earning players overall, as part of their strategy to allocate resources for potential new signings next summer and adhere to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Following the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and David De Gea, Raphael Varane assumed the position of Manchester United’s highest-paid player. He attained this status after transferring to the club in a £34 million deal from Real Madrid two and a half years ago. Despite concerns about his fitness, Varane continues to play a significant role in Erik Ten Hag’s plans, featuring in United’s last two matches.

However, the club is currently in a state of uncertainty as they await the ratification of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s purchase of a 25 per cent stake by the Premier League.

Manchester United’s Varane Faces Interest from Bayern Munich and Real Madrid

Manchester United’s decision not to exercise the automatic extension option on Varane’s contract poses the risk of him departing for free at the end of the season. This strategy mirrors the approach taken with David De Gea a year ago, where the extension clause in the goalkeeper’s contract was not triggered in an effort to reduce his £375,000-a-week wages. Although De Gea was later offered a new contract, he opted not to accept it and left the club last summer.

Despite recent interest from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, Varane is reported to be content at United. Notably, several other players, including Anthony Martial, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jonny Evans, and Tom Heaton, are also set to be out of contract in the summer. Manchester United has chosen not to provide a comment on the matter.

While Raphael Varane is not actively seeking a move in the January transfer window, he reportedly senses a push for his departure and is disappointed with the overall situation at Manchester United in the 2023-24 season. He perceives issues that need addressing both on and off the field. Varane, who has missed seven games for the Red Devils this season, expresses discontent, having been absent for 38 out of 138 matches since his arrival from Real Madrid in 2021.

Manchester United asserts that no one is being compelled to leave their plans, but they have exercised the extension option in Victor Lindelof’s deal. The uncertainty surrounding Raphael Varane’s future seems likely to persist, with ongoing links to Bayern Munich and Lens. As of now, no definitive decision has been reached regarding what will unfold next in Varane’s situation.

Bayern Munich’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, has revealed intentions to secure a defender in the January transfer window. Reports suggest that the German champions are prepared to make an offer exceeding £17 million for Raphael Varane. This development could play a crucial role, providing Manchester United with the opportunity to secure a transfer fee for the Lens youth graduate instead of potentially losing him for free in the upcoming season.
