Manchester United blocked Van de Beek’s transfer to Everton for ‘promise of more playing time’

Donny Van de Beek has been stuck to the bench during his time at Manchester United. The former Ajax midfielder made an ambitious move to Old Trafford in 2020 for a fee around £30 million, but has found opportunities to play in the starting eleven very rare to come by.

The Dutchman has mainly been deployed during matches being held midweek such as Cup ties. According to Fabrizio Romano, Everton were in line for a transfer for the playmaker and had totally finalised all talks with United and the player before his transfer was blocked.

Manchester United decided to make the deal fall through telling Van de Beek that he would be given more playing time this year. However, that has not been the case as yet another new season passes the 24-year-old by. His place in the Netherlands national team has also been thrown into doubt as a result of his irregular club appearances.

Throughout this time, Van de Beek has been extremely professional, a thought echoed by Romano. He is still making himself available for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but is finding it very hard to start ahead of the likes of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes who play in a similar creative midfielder role in the 4-2-3-1.

After the rather disappointing spell of the 24-year-old with the Manchester club, it seems almost certain that he will move on during the January transfer window or during the summer at the latest.
