There is ongoing speculation about the future of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. As it stands, the Catalan head coach is out of contract in the summer of 2021 and there have been no renewed efforts of a contract extension in recent times.

Given that, the City board would need clarity so that they can decide to take further steps in their succession planning of the management as well as refreshing the squad. And two names that have been linked in particular, are former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino and current RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann.

Bundesliga | Julian Nagelsmann: What makes the RB Leipzig coach so different?

The latter is of particular interest to City and it is understood according to a media report, that “City are preparing a shortlist of candidates to replace Guardiola should he decide not to extend his stay in Manchester. And there are two names on City’s wish list: RB Leipzig boss Nagelsmann and the former Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino.”

Nagelsmann of course, famously guided Leipzig to a famous Champions League semi-final last season only to fall short at the mark to eventual finalists Paris-Saint Germain. But, he has won many plaudits from the footballing community for introducing fresh ideas on the pitch and making the best use of his players in innovative tactical and playing a general style of attacking high-field football.

From Man City’s perspective, perhaps fresh ideas are what might be needed to scale up the increasing reputation of the club. With Guardiola completing five years after the end of the present season, City have not made a great start to their league campaign with the Sky Blues only winning 2 of their first five games so far.

The Champions League has been an elusive trophy for the club to achieve and it is possible that this could be Guardiola’s final shot at it before Nagelsmann could potentially take over at the club. Only time will tell the future of these two brilliant gentlemen.
