Following the debut of John Madden’s face on the cover of Madden NFL 23, EA Sports has released the first gameplay teaser for this year’s simulation game, detailing what’s new.
The “Fieldsense” system, which EA claims will provide “greater control at all positions in every mode,” is perhaps the most significant new feature in Madden NFL 23. This new approach, according to EA, will aid in the delivery of “ultra-realistic gameplay,” which will include new animations and player control features.

The face of the Franchise is also updated in Madden NFL 23 with a new experience called The League. There will be new player-focused cameras and position-specific mechanisms. Franchise mode, on the other hand, will have “simplified” team-building mechanics, according to EA.
Field sense includes tackles and hitting as a component. On defense, Madden NFL 23 will have “branching technology,” which allows players to perform actions like mid-air knockouts and jumping on the pile for tackles that are already in process. According to EA, players will be able to perform standup tackles and have a greater ability to force turnovers, to increase realism across the board.
EA stated that the Madden NFL 23 will also feature “360 Cuts,” which give ball carriers “greater mobility and fluidity” to find the gaps and score a touchdown. “With the Left Trigger/L2 and a well-timed flick of the stick, you can plant and go, escape defenders to break big plays, or hard cut and swiftly change direction just like the best in the NFL.
A new accuracy reticle and passing meter are also part of the Fieldsense technology, which allows for “skill-based passing.” With the new approach, players will be able to regulate control and precision with greater granularity than previously. EA said that most of Madden’s key systems have been upgraded this year, and three areas of foundational football have been fully tweaked up based on user feedback, including Pass Coverage, Pass Rush, and restraining mobile quarterbacks.
A new staff management system, a weekly game planning system, and more advanced scouting are among the additions and improvements coming to Franchise mode. The trade logic system in Franchise mode has also been modified to better reflect realistic player valuations.
In the meantime, playbooks have been reduced to avoid overwhelming players. “Madden NFL contains a comprehensive portfolio of detailed, authentic playbooks, but no coach brings their whole playbook into every game,” says the developer.
Features in the Game
According to EA Sports, you’ll have the correct number of plays per playbook in Madden NFL 23, much like a head coach would on game day, making it easier to discover the plays you want. Each team’s playbook will be centered on the plays that they are most likely to run in real life, enhancing the authenticity of each team’s distinct style.
In terms of graphics, Madden NFL 23 seeks to provide a “new degree of visual realism” throughout the game. New “player-locked, 4K touchdown cameras” will be available, aiming to match the current NFL TV broadcasts.
Furthermore, EA claims that this year’s athlete models are better, with a “significant leap” in body types based on NFL player scans. This year, even player hair strands are expected to appear better, and the attention to detail extends to how towels are positioned.
The exteriors of stadiums have also been enhanced, according to EA. Madden NFL 23 will be released on August 19 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and last-generation platforms. Members of EA Play can start three days early, on August 16.
