Official: Luka Modrić Signs New Deal at AC Milan Until June 2027

One of football’s most enduring legends has made his decision. AC Milan have confirmed that Croatian captain Luka Modrić has signed a new contract keeping him at the club until 30 June 2027. The veteran playmaker will remain at the San Siro for the 2026–27 campaign, providing a significant boost to new head coach Ruben Amorim as he prepares for his first season in charge of the Rossoneri.

The club praised the Croatian midfielder for bringing his experience and quality to the team both on and off the pitch, highlighting his humility and passion for the game.

The club also confirmed that Luka Modrić will continue to wear the number 14 shirt for AC Milan.

Who is Luka Modrić?

Luka Modrić, born 9 September 1985, is a Croatian footballer renowned for his vision, passing, leadership and consistency. Modrić’s family was displaced during the Croatian war of independence. His grandfather was killed by Serbian militia, and his childhood home remains abandoned to this day. Modrić and his family lived as refugees in hotels during the war, sometimes with neither running water nor electricity. As a child, Modrić used to play football in the parking lots of those hotels.

As a youngster, he was turned down by several clubs due to his slight build. Not everyone believed in him during the early stages of his career at Dinamo Zagreb, but he turned that perceived weakness into one of his greatest strengths.

After starting out at Dinamo Zagreb, his burgeoning talent took him to Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur before a big move to Real Madrid, where he won it all: six UEFA Champions League crowns, four Spanish league titles and a plethora of domestic and international trophies — including six FIFA global club titles — becoming the heartbeat of Los Blancos’ midfield for more than a decade.

He had previously stated he would make a decision on whether to stay at the club or retire after the 2026 World Cup, where Croatia lost to Portugal and exited in the round of 32.

Milan announced the news after Modrić returned from his fifth World Cup, where he started all four games leading Croatia and passed 200 appearances for the national team.

Before putting pen to paper, there were persistent rumours that Modrić might choose to hang up his boots or explore a coaching role elsewhere. There had been suggestions that there could be a backroom role on offer to him at his former club Real Madrid, but he will now be remaining in Milan for at least one more year.

Modrić is expected to earn €3.5m per season plus bonuses until June 2027. In addition to his base salary, the new contract includes performance bonuses, a financially advantageous structure for both the player and the club.
