Recently, the renowned and highly trustable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has brought the news of the two successful meetings between PSG President Nasser Al Khelaifi and Luis Campos. The official statements will come soon, as the agreement has been signed according to the recent report of Fabrizio.
Luis Campos’ expected roles in PSG
As a director of football of PSG, Campos will be the advisor of the President and head of the football. He will be the key man to handle the team as he will discuss the players’ singing, contract extension, transfers as well as the appointment of the manager.
During the end of the last season (2021/22), Brazilian Leonardo left his sporting director position at the Paris SG. Campos is ready to become his successor soon.
Luis Campos’ career in football
Luis Campos managed various football teams for more than a decade of his football manager career (1992-2005). He also worked as a scout and tactical analyst for Real Madrid under the management of Jose Mourinho.
Campos now generally plays the role of director of football for European clubs. The director of football, which is also known as the sporting director, is an essential member of the senior management system of some European football clubs.
As time progress, the role is transforming as some directors of football are playing key roles in the clubs’ improvement on the field. Campos is surely one of them as he has made this role very special with his powerful tactics in recent times.
Campos in Monaco
As a director of football, Campos is famous for introducing talented footballers to the club at their very early ages. The former sporting director of the French Ligue 1 club AS Monaco helped the Monégasques to grow up once again in this sport.
During his entire Moncao tenure between 2013 and 2016, where Campos also played the role of technical director, he introduced many top talents like Radamel Falcao, Joao Moutinho, James Rodriguez, Fabinho, Anthony Martial, Ricardo Carvalho, Bernardo Silva, Kylian Mbappe, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Thomas Lemar and many more.
In the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League season, Monaco finished as the semi-finalist after losing against the Italian club Juventus. Apart from finishing as the Group E champions in that competition, Monaco also beat the English club Manchester City (based on away goal rule despite losing the first leg in England) and German club Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16 and Quarter-finals respectively.
However, in that same 2016/17 season, Monaco won their first French Ligue 1 since 1999/2000. Campos played a massive role in these successes, despite leaving the club after the 2015/16 season.
Campos in Lille
Most recently, Lille OSC impressed with their performances in the Ligue 1 as they won the Ligue 1 title in the 2020/21 season, the first such trophy since 2010/11. Between July 2017 and December 2020, Luis Campos was the sporting director of that club. So, there was no surprise in Lille’s recent success in domestic football.
PSG has big hope
Now, PSG are hoping to see the similar magic from Luis Campos. They are already dominating domestic football, including winning eight out of the last ten French Ligue 1 titles. The 2019/20 UEFA Champions League runners-up will now definitely aim to claim their first UCL trophy as soon as possible.
Campos recently worked for the Turkish club Galatasaray and Spanish club Celta Vigo as an external consultant.
