Lucky Episode 4 Recap: The Truth Behind Cary’s Betrayal Finally Comes Out — And It Costs Him Everything

Apple TV’s crime thriller just delivered its most gut-punching hour yet. Episode 4 of “Lucky,” titled “Too Close to See It,” finally answers why Cary betrayed his wife — and the truth is far messier than anyone expected.

What Really Happened With Cary’s Betrayal?

The episode reveals that Cary’s original betrayal was more tangled than a simple grab for cash — hiding the stolen money in a crypto wallet was actually meant to protect Lucky, even as their fragile reconciliation had to survive interference from the FBI, Priscilla, and Dutch. DM Talkies

The backstory gets darker: Priscilla had ordered Cary to retrieve the stolen ten million after John took it, threatening Lucky when her son resisted, and also revealed to Cary that Lucky had secretly helped federal agents arrest her. That betrayal within a betrayal reframes Cary as someone caught between a ruthless crime family and a marriage he still wanted to save. DM Talkies

Cary had drugged Lucky, kissed her goodbye, and driven off with the cash to deliver it to his mother, who’d promised to leave the couple alone afterward. But watching his mother laugh carelessly with her hitman Dutch while waiting in the car, Cary realized how little his sacrifices meant to her — and decided he was done being her obedient pawn.

Lucky Episode 4: Chase That Changes Everything

Lucky tries to disappear into a crowd with Cary after ditching his Bronco, but Priscilla and Dutch intercept them, and a stolen car buys little time before Agent Rand joins the pursuit. To help his wife escape reckless traffic, Cary shoots at the pursuing cars’ tires, prompting the police to fire back — the resulting crash leaves Cary shot in the abdomen. Ready Steady CutFandomWire

In his final moments, Luciana watches Cary take his last breaths beside her as he replays their happy memories, leaving her devastated and forced to flee with only his laptop. Priscilla, watching from a distance, chooses loyalty to her boss Whittaker over reaching her dying son. FandomWire

Why This Episode Matters

Episode 4 offers a compelling mix of relationship drama and on-the-run thrills, using the push-and-pull between Lucky and Cary alongside flashbacks that reveal key secrets — Cary may have betrayed Lucky, but she also lied to him and helped get his mother arrested. With Cary now gone, the back half of the season is set up to shift focus onto the women scheming around him. Comic Basics
