Lovlina Borgohain Stuns a World Champion and Sends India Into a Golden Dream

Underdog stories don’t get much better than this. At the Asian Games 2026, Lovlina Borgohain edged Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova, the reigning 70kg world champion, by a 3-2 split decision in the women’s 75kg semi-final. With that win, she became the first Indian woman boxer to reach back-to-back Asian Games finals.

Lovlina Borgohain: A Historic Day for Indian Boxing

Lovlina joins Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal, who won their semi-finals a day earlier, in the gold medal bouts. That means India has three finalists from 11 entries, already better than the four medals won across 13 categories in Hangzhou. It’s also the first time India has two women in an Asian Games boxing final.

Kapil and Priya both won bronze on debut. Kapil lost 1-4 to Uzbekistan’s Turabek Khabibullaev in his semi-final, while Priya fell to China’s Yang Chengyu. Kapil said he was disappointed to miss the final but proud of the medal. He dedicated it to his coaches and family and thanked the Inspire Institute of Sport for its support.

What Comes Next?

Six medals are already guaranteed: three bronze and three silvers that can still turn gold. Everything now rides on the finals, and Lovlina’s giant-killing run suggests she won’t be intimidated by anyone.
