Lorne Michaels Finally Gets His Documentary: ‘Lorne’ Lands on Netflix This October After Its Peacock Run

For a man who has spent five decades shaping American comedy, Lorne Michaels has always been oddly hard to pin down. He rarely gives interviews, avoids the spotlight, and has let Saturday Night Live speak for him since 1975. Now, that mystery finally gets unpacked. Lorne, the acclaimed documentary exploring his life and legacy, is officially heading to Netflix US on October 5th, 2026, following its earlier run in theaters and on Peacock.

If you missed it during its spring theatrical release or its initial streaming window, this is your chance to catch up on one of the year’s most talked-about entertainment documentaries.

Lorne Film: What It’s About and Who’s In It

Directed by Academy Award winner Morgan Neville — the filmmaker behind Won’t You Be My Neighbor? and 20 Feet From Stardom — Lorne skips the dry, textbook approach to SNL history. Instead, it leans on a sprawling cast of comedy legends and SNL alumni to piece together a picture of Michaels, since the man himself remains famously guarded.

Across its 101-minute runtime, the documentary features interviews and appearances from a genuinely stacked lineup: Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Conan O’Brien, Chris Rock, Colin Jost, Kristen Wiig, and even Michaels’ longtime friend Paul Simon.

The timing feels deliberate too. Lorne arrives as the perfect capstone to a year already thick with SNL nostalgia, bridging the gap between the show’s landmark 50th-anniversary celebrations and Jason Reitman’s fictionalized 2024 film Saturday Night.

Why Is an NBC-Adjacent Documentary Landing on Netflix?

This is the part that trips people up. SNL is an NBC institution through and through, so how does its origin-story documentary end up on a rival streamer? The answer comes down to a licensing structure rather than any change in ownership.

Netflix and Universal have a sweeping output agreement that brings Universal’s live-action and animated catalog — including titles from its specialty arm, Focus Features — onto the platform. Here’s how the window actually works: a film opens in theaters, then gets an exclusive four-month run on Peacock (NBCUniversal’s own service), before finally moving over to Netflix.

Lorne followed that path precisely. It opened in theaters on April 17th, 2026, moved to Peacock on June 5th, and now, with that exclusive window wrapped, it’s crossing over to Netflix on October 5th. Under the terms of the deal, it’ll stream on Netflix for roughly ten months before eventually cycling back to Peacock for the final stretch of its Pay-1 window.

It’s a good reminder of just how complicated modern streaming distribution has become — the same title can hop between two competing platforms depending purely on contractual windows, not creative decisions.

One Thing You Won’t Be Able to Pair It With

If you were hoping to double up your SNL nostalgia binge, there’s a small catch. Jason Reitman’s dramatized Saturday Night, which covers the chaotic hours before the show’s original 1975 premiere, actually left Netflix on July 25th after an 18-month run under a separate Sony Pictures licensing deal. So for now, Lorne will be flying solo on the platform rather than sitting alongside its dramatized companion piece.

The Bigger Picture: Universal’s Growing Netflix Pipeline

Lorne is just one piece of a much larger wave. Universal and Focus Features have a packed slate of titles cycling onto Netflix over the next year as part of this same output deal, spanning everything from awards contenders to studio tentpoles. It’s part of a broader industry shift where streamers increasingly license major studio content rather than relying purely on in-house originals — a trend that traces back to how streaming itself evolved, as outlined on Netflix’s Wikipedia page, covering the company’s shift from DVD rentals into a global content distributor working with major studios worldwide.

For entertainment and tech readers tracking how streaming licensing deals reshape where content lands, this kind of studio-to-platform pipeline is becoming the norm rather than the exception — and it’s worth watching how it plays out across other major studios too.

Should You Watch It?

If you’ve followed SNL even loosely over the years, Lorne is a rare chance to see the man behind the curtain — not through a scripted lens like Saturday Night, but through the voices of the people who worked alongside him for decades. With an A-list roster of interviewees and Neville’s proven documentary instincts, this one’s shaping up to be a strong October watch.
