Lockheed Martin and Tata’s $10.5B C-130J Bid: Could 48 India-Built Aircraft Reshape the IAF?

India’s skies may soon get a new workhorse, and a good part of it could be built at home. Lockheed Martin has said it will expand production in India if it wins the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) 60-aircraft Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) contract, with Tata as its manufacturing partner.

Why This Matters?

The IAF’s Soviet-era transporters are overdue for retirement. India’s Defence Acquisition Council cleared the MTA plan on March 27, 2026, and the request for proposals followed on August 12, 2026. Airbus has dropped out, so this is now largely a two-horse race.

Lockheed’s pitch is simple: we’re already here. Its joint venture with Tata in Hyderabad has built over 260 C-130J tail assemblies, which are shipped to Lockheed’s US line for every new Super Hercules. The company argues that this existing ecosystem lets it scale up faster than a rival starting from scratch. Tata is also expected to set up maintenance facilities for the aircraft, which would give the programme a long-term servicing base in India.

There’s a practical angle too. Upgrading the current 12 aircraft to the new standard would give the IAF one fleet of 72, with shared training, spares and maintenance. For a force that depends on logistics, that’s no small thing.

The Competition

Bids are still being evaluated, and a final decision will take time. Whoever wins will shape India’s airlift capability, and its aerospace jobs, for decades.
