Lisa Makes VMAs History: First Asian Solo Artist to Win Best Pop for “DREAM”

Some wins are trophies. Others are milestones. On September 27 (local time), BLACKPINK’s Lisa took home Best Pop at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, and in doing so, she rewrote the record books.

She won for her single “DREAM,” featuring Sakaguchi Kentaro, at the ceremony held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. MTV announced the result on X, and Lisa’s acceptance speech is now circulating among fans.

Lisa Winner Updates

Why This Matters?

The headline number is “first.” Lisa is the first-ever Asian solo artist to win the category, and only the second Asian artist overall to do so. In a category dominated by global pop names, that’s a meaningful crack in a long-standing barrier.

It also puts a spotlight on “DREAM” itself. The song was tied to an emotional short film that starred Lisa and Sakaguchi Kentaro, so the win recognizes a project that blended music with storytelling, not just a single track.

A Big Night for K-pop Fans

The 2026 VMAs also had several other K-pop acts among the nominees, including BTS, BLACKPINK, CORTIS, LE SSERAFIM, KATSEYE and HUNTR/X, which shows how firmly the genre now sits in mainstream pop conversations. Lisa’s win adds a defining moment to that story.

If you want to relive the moment, her acceptance speech is available through Soompi’s coverage and MTV’s official posts.
