Messi has now officially scored 50 freekicks in his glorious career.
Lionel Messi scored his 50th career freekick goal against Real Valladolid on Tuesday. He fired the ball from 25 yards out past the goalkeeper, Jordi Masip in a typical Messi fashion.
Messi has now scored 44 freekicks for Barcelona and 6 freekicks for Argentina.
Messi’s brilliance has once again bailed Barcelona out against Real Valladolid.
Just as Ronaldo-less Real Madrid has been struggling since last season, Barcelona would be much more worse without Messi. When Messi was injured at the beginning of the season, Barcelona made their worst LaLiga start in 25 years.
Since Messi has returned from injury, Barcelona are now on top of the LaLiga table. His assists for Arturo Vidal and Luis Suárez were inch-perfect, before scoring twice himself with typically precise finishes from distance. He was everywhere on the pitch against Real Valladolid.
It’s not just his productivity. It’s the movement, it’s the touch, it’s his general aura on the pitch that nobody else can replicate – and Barcelona are lost without him. The thought of the post-Messi era alone will make the Barcelona fans shiver.
Lionel Messi now has 50 freekicks to his name. But let’s take a look at the top 10 freekick goal scorers of all-time:
- Juninho Pernambucano (77)
- Pele (70)
- Nicola Legrottaglie (66)
- Ronaldinho (66)
- David Beckham (65)
- Diego Maradona (62)
- Zico (62)
- Ronald Koeman (60)
- Rogerio Ceni (59)
- Marcelinho Carioca (59)
It’s very much surprising that none of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is in the top 10 freekick goal scorers list. But time is on their side, so hopefully, the two best players of this generation will break into that top 10 list.
Messi’s Barcelona teammate Vidal told Movistar Plus: “It makes a difference with Leo giving all his quality. When he’s like this, the team feels it. We see him every day, but he surprises us every day. Leo is from another planet.
We are happy, we won and the team felt good. I have no words to talk about Leo. You have to take advantage of it and make the most of him.”
He further added: “These victories help you, but you have to keep improving,” Vidal, who has been linked to Serie A outfit Inter, added. “The game against Slavia [Prague in the Champions League] is not what we know how to do. Hopefully, it won’t happen to us from now on.”
