Lionel Messi last captained Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia. But they was knocked out in the round of 16 by Luka Modric’s Croatia. Messi is yet to comment on when he will be available again for Argentina. He has skipped a pair of friendlies in September. He is also not included in Scaloni’s squad for the matches against Iraq and Brazil this month either. The coach is unclear on when he may be able to select Messi again.

“I spoke with Messi about 10 days ago, after the talk we made the final decision he is not to be called up. ” Scaloni said at a news conference on Monday. “We do not talk about what could happen in a while. We talked about how the team played because honestly Leo sees everything. But not beyond that because in my head we have not planned more than six games.” he added.

Lionel Messi has previously retired from Argentina after the 2016 Copa America Centenario defeat against Chile on penalties. However, the Barcelona star returned to his international team. He proved instrumental in Argentina’s qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. They qualified on the final day of qualifying thanks to Messi’s hat-trick against Ecuador.

Maradona wants Lionel Messi to reitre from international duty.

The fans hope Messi will again make his return to the team after a break and have no doubt about his return. But the Argentina legend Diego Maradona has told Lionel Messi to retire from international duty. He claimed that Messi receives too much criticism for the team’s results. “The under-15s lose and it’s Messi’s fault. ” Maradona told Clarin. “The fixture in Argentina puts Racing against Boca and Messi is to blame. It’s always his fault. I would say, ‘Don’t go anymore’. Let’s see if they can handle it.” Maradona added.
